The house mouse is the rodent we deal with most. Mice start moving indoors when fall nights get close to freezing, usually in October, and they keep coming through the winter. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime, so the gaps around a gas line, dryer vent, garage door or stone foundation are more than enough.
Norway rats are less common but harder to live with. They burrow along foundations, under sheds and decks and near compost, bird feeders and garbage, and they turn up more often near the Grand, Speed and Eramosa rivers, rail lines and busy restaurant areas.
Both carry disease. Health Canada and public health agencies warn that rodent droppings and urine can spread illnesses such as salmonella and, rarely in Canada, hantavirus. Rodents also chew wiring, insulation and stored food.

The difference matters, because rats avoid new bait stations and traps for days. A rat job needs a different setup and often a second visit.

Look at the droppings. Mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice with pointed ends. Rat droppings are about the size of a raisin with blunt ends. Mice usually nest inside walls and cupboards, while rats often burrow outside along the foundation, under decks or beside sheds.
