Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood, usually at night. Adults are about 5 to 7 mm long, roughly the size and shape of an apple seed. Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller and paler, and the eggs are white and about the size of a pinhead. They don’t fly or jump. They crawl, and they travel between homes in luggage, backpacks, second-hand furniture, moving boxes and clothing.
Bed bugs aren’t a sign of a dirty home. They show up in new condos, student houses, family homes and hotels alike. They’re not known to spread disease, but bites can itch, cause skin reactions and make it very hard to sleep. Region of Waterloo Public Health and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health both recommend acting early, because small infestations are much easier to control.
Not everyone reacts to bites, so the spots and droppings are often a better clue than the bites themselves.
Start at the bed. Check mattress seams, tags and piping, box spring corners, the underside and joints of the bed frame and the screw holes of the headboard. Then look at nightstands, couch and recliner seams, carpet edges along baseboards, behind picture frames and outlet covers, curtain folds and any clutter near the bed. In apartments and townhouses, bed bugs also travel through wall voids, around pipes and along hallways to neighbouring units.
We treat bed bugs with Aprehend, a biopesticide made by Rockwell Labs. The active ingredient is spores of Beauveria bassiana, a fungus that occurs naturally in soil. Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency registered it for indoor bed bug control in 2020 (registration decision RD2020-05).
According to the manufacturer:
Because Aprehend works on contact over time, you don’t have to empty every drawer or bag everything you own. You do need to leave the bands alone, which is why prep and aftercare matter. We don’t use heat treatment.
The full checklist is on our bed bug prep sheet. The short version:
Rockwell Labs’ homeowner prep sheet has the same steps in more detail.
Bug bombs and foggers don’t reach bed bugs hidden in seams, cracks and wall voids, and they can drive bugs into other rooms or the unit next door. Most store-bought sprays only kill bugs they hit directly, and bed bugs can survive for months without feeding. Throwing out the mattress rarely solves anything: carrying it through the home spreads bugs, and the new one gets infested. Lasting control takes a thorough inspection and a treatment that keeps working after the visit.
Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph have a lot of rental housing, from student houses near the universities to high-rise apartments and townhouse complexes. Bed bugs move between units through shared walls, outlets, plumbing and hallways, so treating one unit while the neighbours are infested usually brings them back. We work with landlords, property managers and tenants to inspect the units beside, above and below, schedule treatment and give every tenant the same prep list. In Ontario, landlords are generally responsible for pest control in rental units, and tenants should report bed bugs to their landlord as soon as they notice them. See commercial pest control for property managers.
Bed bug treatment typically costs about $1,000 to $1,400 or more before HST, depending on how many bedrooms are treated.
| Job | Typical range before HST |
|---|---|
| Smaller home or apartment | From about $1,000 |
| Larger home with more bedrooms | Up to about $1,400 or more |
| Multi-unit buildings | Quoted after an inspection |
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your technician confirms the price before work starts. See the pest control cost guide.

Bed bugs leave evidence besides bites: small blood spots on sheets, dark droppings along mattress seams, pale shed skins and sometimes live bugs in the seams or bed frame. Bites in a line or cluster that appear overnight are typical. Fleas usually bite ankles and lower legs, and you’ll often see them on pets.
The treatment visit usually takes a few hours, depending on the number of rooms. Aprehend keeps working for up to three months, and most bed bugs die within about 4 to 10 days of crossing a band. You may see a few live bugs for two to three weeks. Call us if you still see live bugs after 30 days.
Usually not. Mattresses and box springs can be treated, and encasements help keep any remaining bugs trapped and make inspections easier. Throwing a mattress out often spreads bed bugs through the home on the way out, and a new mattress brought into an untreated room will be infested again.
Yes, after a short wait. People and pets should stay out of treated rooms until the spray is dry, which usually takes a few hours, and pets should stay out for at least four hours. After that, sleep in your own bed as usual, because bed bugs need to come out and cross the treated bands.
Aprehend is a biopesticide made by Rockwell Labs. Its active ingredient is spores of Beauveria bassiana, a fungus found naturally in soil, and it’s registered by Health Canada for indoor bed bug control. Bed bugs that cross the sprayed bands pick up spores, which infect and kill them, and they carry spores to other bugs.
No. We treat bed bugs with Aprehend. It keeps working on bugs that hatch after the visit, so most homes need only one application, and you don’t have to remove heat-sensitive belongings from the home. You do need to follow the prep sheet and leave the treated bands alone afterwards.
Yes. We treat single units and multi-unit buildings for landlords, property managers and tenants in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Neighbouring units should be inspected too, because bed bugs move through walls and hallways. For multi-unit buildings, an inspection is required for an exact quote.
Bed bug treatment typically costs about $1,000 to $1,400 or more before HST, depending on how many bedrooms are treated. Multi-unit buildings cost more and are quoted after an inspection, because neighbouring units usually need treatment too. Your technician confirms the price before any work starts.
