The Grand and Speed rivers run right through Cambridge, and much of Galt, Preston and Hespeler is built from 19th-century stone. Old stone foundations and river valleys are good news for mice, ants and spiders, and the city’s apartment buildings and 401 commercial corridor add bed bugs, cockroaches and rats.

Mice and rats. Fieldstone and rubble foundations in older Galt and Hespeler homes have gaps a mouse can slip through, and mice move in as soon as fall nights turn cold. Rats are more common near the rivers, rail lines, restaurants and commercial bins. We use tamper-resistant bait stations and traps and seal the entry points we find at ground level. Ants and carpenter ants. Pavement ants come up through basement floors and patios, and carpenter ants move into damp wood in older porches, window frames and decks. See ant control.

Cockroaches. German cockroaches spread between units through plumbing and shared walls in apartment buildings, and they turn up in restaurant kitchens. See cockroach extermination.
